Tasman “The Dark Queen”

At the beginning of The Broken Circle, Tasman rules the Lowlands, but twenty years ago she was an apprentice, second in line for Aubergine’s position as Potluck Queen. Impetuously, she placed her brother Kendrick in Sierra’s path, forever changing the course of all three of their lives. Eager to possess the full power of Aubergine’s amethysts, she tried the necklace on one day and found she could not bear to take it off. After a struggle with Teal in which the circle was broken, she stole away in the night to the safety of the Lowlands.

Called The Dark Queen, Tasman is raven haired with cold green eyes. Her mother was foreign, from an out island beyond the Fisheries of the Far East, but was brought north to the icy Out Crops by her father, Hed Clansman Maddig Hoar. When Tasman was born, all could see that she carried a spark of First Folk Fire inside, but knew that being a girl, it would never kindle. Not wanting to waste even a vestige of magic, her family sent her south to Potluck Yarn.

There, Tasman mastered many dark arts, including inhabiting hosts for shape shifting and discarding their bodies afterwards. Occasionally, skins of stray dogs and alley cats could be found on the walkways and Tasman would appear to be everywhere and nowhere.

Very cleverly she usurped Sierra’s place as heir to the Potluck. After saving Kendrick from certain death when he kindled, she conjured him into an obstacle in the path of Sierra’s destiny. Forced to decide between the power of the potluck and the enchanted life of family and farm she secretly dreamed of, Sierra chose Kendrick.

With little to oppose her, Tasman became Aubergine’s protégé, and slowly began to bend all will to herself, including the laws of nature. She deceived even Aubergine who believed Tasman was studying her craft in order to maintain the natural balance of peace in all of the lands. Privy to the Potluck Queen’s lore, Tasman secretly aligned herself with the Lowlanders.

The terrible night she left, Tasman took with her all that she could, including Aubergine’s necklace, strung with twelve magic crystals. In the Lowlands, she honed her lore. The four elements of Nature she treated so harshly that the southern lands could not sustain food and the water evaporated except for the great salt lakes that stretched further than anyone could see.

As time passed, Tasman’s raiders ranged further and further north, finally burning out the caves on the south side of the Northland Glacier, now known as The Burnt Holes in their quest for water and more. These transgressions did not go unnoticed by the North but full blown war did not erupt until the Lowlanders killed a Hed Clansman during one of their raids. He just happened to be Tasman’s own father, Hed Maddig Hoar.
