Self-Striping Handpaints from Peru

peruhp_pileWhat a pleasant surprise to get a package from one of the handpaint yarn co-ops in Peru that I spent time with last month. I showed them nine color combinations and they did each one with a variant–now we have to pick nine self-striping colorways out of the eighteen they sent for 2014.  It’s going to be so difficult!

peruhp_skeinThese are silk and merino fingering weight blends that will be featured in the second book of the Potluck Yarn Trilogy, Secrets of the Lost Caves. Each color stripes for about 60″ giving us a lot of opportunity for color play. My friend Donna Druchunas came over after lunch and we tried to pick our nine favorite, but we always came up with ten.  Of course these yarns will look differently when knit, so that’s a whole ‘nother thing to consider.

peruhp_pile_closeupOn purpose I chose brighter colors than usual, because the second book in a trilogy is supposed to be so dark and I wanted contrast. Plus the witches are trekking to the Crystal Caves after all!

Thanks to everyone who has offered to test knit Smokey Jo’s Magical Oven Mitt designed by Debra Jennings who won our Call for Designs Contest. We’ll let you know whom we pick soon!
