What’s in a name?

TraderEarly in The Broken Circle, we meet the character of Trader, a girl posing as a fossick boy who is the leader of a group called The Dell Fossickers. We soon find out that Trader has many names, including Traitor and Trickle T. Trader’s real name is Traces of Teal, but we don’t learn this until after she reveals herself as a girl to Skye.

Why does Trader go by so many names? Because she has to. As she explains to Skye, she’s been hiding her identity her whole life. She is on the run, but she is not sure who seek her out, only that they are what she calls “pure evil.”

TracesTealIf she knew the origin of her birth name, it would provide her a clue. She was named after her aunt Tracery Teal who was one of the original knitting witches. When Tasman destroyed Teal twenty years ago, mere traces of her remained, in the form of drifting green fog. When Trader was born, her mother named her Traces of Teal, after her aunt.

Later, no one is more surprised that Trader herself when she inherits her aunt’s legacy.
